Many Religious Groups Claim Jesus; however...
Religious groups from Islam to Mormonism refer to the Christian personage of JESUS. They all seem to venerate or embrace Him to some degree or another. Are all those who claim some type of relationship
talking about the same Jesus that Orthodox Christians follow?
I believe that it may be edifying to explore just to whom the major groups are referring to. First, of course it would be helpful to explore how Orthodox Christians describe the Messiah.
Jesus' man nature was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He was crucified, died and was buried. He rose from the grave on the third day and ascended into Heaven. He is eternally God.
He took on the nature of a man while still maintaining His God nature. He was for a time both God and man (the God-Man).
His death and resurrection paid the full price of our sin debt, so that through Him and Him alone, a person can achieve full salvation and eternal life.
Simply put: Jesus is God, and no one can achieve eternal life in heaven by any other means or persons than Jesus the Christ. For an Orthodox Christian, this is not open for discussion - it is non negotiable!
Any one that denies the deity of Jesus, His resurrection and that He is the only means of salvation cannot honestly be referring to the Jesus of Orthodox Christianity.
In any discussion or pronouncement, it is very important to insure that you are
both talking about the Jesus of Orthodox Christianity and not some other
personage.
Jehovah's Witnesses and Jesus
There are some similar concepts about Jesus shared by Muslims and Mormons that
are in direct conflict with Orthodox Christianity. Any insinuation or statement
of faith that states that Jesus was/is not God or that He was not
eternally part of the Holy Trinity brands that group (s) as a non-Christian
entity.
JW’s believe that Jesus
Christ was a perfect man, and that He is a person distinct from God the
Father. However, they also teach that before His earthly life, Jesus was a
spirit creature, Michael the archangel, who was created by God and became the Messiah
at His baptism. According to Jehovah’s Witnesses, Jesus is a mighty one, although
not almighty as Jehovah God is. According to John 1:1 in their
Bible, The New World Translation, Christ
is “a god,” but not “the
God.” They teach that Jesus “was and is and
always will be beneath Jehovah” and that “Christ and God are not coequal”.
Islam and Jesus
There are more, but three things puts Islam in direct opposition to Orthodox Christianity.
Jesus, God or just man
“The Messiah (Jesus), son of Mary, was no more than a Messenger before whom many Messengers have passed away; and his mother adhered wholly to truthfulness, and they both ate food (as other mortals do).
See how We make Our signs clear to them; and see where they are turning away!” (Quran 5:75).
God the Father, Son and Holy Ghost
“People of the Book (Jews and Christians)! Do not exceed the limits in your religion, and attribute to God nothing except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, was only a Messenger of God,
and His command that He conveyed unto Mary, and a spirit from Him. So believe in God and in His Messengers, and do not say: ‘God is a Trinity.’ Give up this assertion; it would be better for you.
God is indeed just One God. Far be it from His glory that He should have a son. To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and in the earth. God is sufficient for a guardian” (Quran 4:171).
The death and resurrection of Jesus
“And because of their saying, ‘We killed Messiah Jesus, son of Mary, the Messenger of God’ – but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but the resemblance of Jesus was put over another man
(and they killed that man), and those who differ therein are full of doubts. They have no knowledge, they follow nothing but conjecture. For surely they killed him not (Jesus, son of Mary).
But God raised him (Jesus) up unto Himself. And God is ever All-Powerful, All-Wise”
(Quran 4:157-158).
As I see it
Since Islam and Orthodox Christianity are in complete disagreement, there is one conclusion: We can both be wrong, but, we can’t both be right! Islam would have to totally discredit the Bible, and they attempt to do so.
Because Jesus claimed to be God in the Bible, and Quran says that he is not, Islam can never accept the Bible, and Orthodox Christianity can not survive without the bible's complete truth.
Mormon's Jesus and Orthodox Christian's Jesus
This is a difficult subject to rationalize because Mormonism is very complicated.
First of all, Mormons believe that non-Mormon Christianity is corrupted and has been corrupted since shortly after the death of the Apostles. They call this as the Great Apostasy.
This Apostasy lasted until 1830 when Joseph Smith restored “true” Christianity to the world.
To understand the who the Mormon Jesus is, we must first define just who and what the god of Mormonism is.
Joseph Smith wrote: God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens! God was God from all eternity. I will refute that idea.
Brigham Young, the second president taught that God the Father was once a man on another planet who 'passed the ordeal we are now passing through.
Apostle Bruce McConkie states, "[A] plurality of gods exist . . . there is an infinite number of holy personages, drawn from worlds without number, who have passed on to
exaltation and are thus gods.
The Doctrine and Covenants states, "God is a glorified and perfected man, a personage of flesh and bones. Inside his tangible body is an eternal spirit."
As I see it
It would seem clear that the god Mormons refer to does not fit the description of the God of Orthodox Christianity. Their god
is not the same, as the one true, God, eternal in the Heavens,
which we as Orthodox Christians worship.
Jesus as Mormons describe him
According to the Doctrine and Covenants and the explanation by Apostle Bruce McCronkie below, Mormons believe that there is
a Heavenly Father, Elohim and his wife the Heavenly Mother.
Apostle Bruce McConkie states, "An exalted and glorified man of holiness could not be a Father unless a woman of like glory, perfection, and holiness was associated
with him as a Mother. The begetting of children makes a man a father and a woman a mother whether we are dealing with man in his mortal or immortal state."
To try to simplify, all people who have ever lived or will ever live on this earth are spirit children of the Heavenly Father and the Heavenly Mother. Jesus, Abraham, Moses, Satan, you and I, are all spirit brothers
and sisters - Jesus and Satan, bin Laden and you are all spirit children of the Heavenly Mother and Heavenly Father. All Spirit Children must come to earth so that they may achieve exaltation and become a god.
So, Mormon Doctrine teaches that Jesus was born as a spirit child, Elohim's first spirit child. He had a
beginning - He was not eternally existent. Had to achieve perfection to become a god. He and the Heavenly Father are
physical beings, and along with the Holy Spirit, a spirit, make up the three gods of the Mormon godhead.
Orthodox Christianity teaches that Jesus was always God and for the sake of our salvation took on the form of a man while still maintaining His God nature. Jesus was not a man who achieved godhood,
but God who took the nature of a man.
