ACTIVITIES

Community UMC is an active church, and it is our hope that you will see an activity or program God will lead you to become involved with.  Perhaps you have experience with another group that you feel we need here and are willing to lead or help with it?  Please do not hesitate to contact Pastor Ken, email pastorkenz@bellsouth.net

Clothes Closet Volunteers

Clothes Closet

Each Wednesday the clothes closet is open from 2-4 PM for those in need to come to our church and receive up to three free outfits each.  This is a most appreciated outreach to the people in our community.  There is usually a line of people waiting when the closet opens.   Please donate your good clothing, shoes, etc.  along with your prayers and time. - Matthew 25: 35 - 40

The Florida United Methodist Children’s Home

Our Children’s Home Coordinator, Mary Shepherd, encourages us to celebrate the history of caring and ministry with the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home in its 100 years. Born out of the love and concern the Florida Annual Conference had for children in need, we as individuals and a congregation continue to partner to meet the needs of the children and young people at the home.

Your fifth Sunday Offering support goes a long way to meeting the day-to-day operating expenses at our Methodist Children's Home. It takes a tremendous amount of resources to provide for the special needs of the children, not only for food, shelter, and clothing, but also loving houseparents in each cottage, therapists, educational support, recreation therapy, a music program, medical care, maintenance of buildings and grounds and their Chapel Ministry.

For 100 years the Florida United Methodist Children's Home has been in continuous operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, caring for children and families in crisis. Your support does make a difference. You may never know or see the children you care for, but countless lives have experienced healing, hope, and the love of Jesus because the Children's Home was there.  Please give generously.  Thank you for making a real difference in the lives of boys and girls who are residents.  God bless you.

Again, Mary Shepard is contact person for these children. A message can be left at the church.

Community Outreach

This ministry reaches out to the neighborhood with baskets of food, visitation,  Christmas gifts for the children next year  and tries to meet the needs of the neighborhood in Jesus' name.  Contact Mary or Buddy Johnson buddysbbq@clearwire.net to become part of this ministry.

Halifax Urban Ministries

Halifax Urban Ministries feeds and helps the homeless at its center on North Street. They would appreciate donations of cash or "pantry" items such as canned goods, peanut butter, boxed dry food, diapers as fall starts.  These may be brought to the church.

Community United Methodist Church has accepted the responsibility of sending 10 to 11 people to the North Street Hallifax Urban Ministries center to help feed the hungry on the third Wednesday of each month.  You are more than welcome to become a part of this outreach.  You are needed.  For more information contact Mary and Dick Shepherd (238-7935), Linda and Mike Massie (756-5714), Lilita Adamson and Herb Moran (255-5411 x 241).  They are among those currently involved and will be happy to answer your questions.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL WAS A GREAT SUCCESS!

More than 50 children were served by your efforts and the Youth of the United Methodist Church of the Palm Beaches.  Your financial and food donations, your time and clothing donations…each was an integral part of a great outreach to the children and youth of our area.  We look forward to doing thsi again next summer.

Frank Heckman leads our relationship with Stewart-Marchman and Beachside Neighborhood Watch
While serving on the Board of Directors of the Stewart-Marchman Foundation, I learned of the need for a civic or church group to "adopt" one of two juvenile detainees programs who are housed at the Stuart-Marchman Center - one being The Oaks consisting of 40 boys and The Pines with 58 girls.  After reviewing this need with the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Beachside Neighborhood Watch, I got the "go-ahead" to "adopt" the 40 boys.

The position of being the "adopted family" consisted of visits with the young men on a frequent basis and getting together for family-type visits.  We began with finding out what the boys liked to do on our evenings with them at the Center.  Renting newly released movies was on the top of their list.  We brought them a movie and a cooler of sodas to enjoy for a fun night.  We all enjoyed being with our boys.  Our Board suggested that we should add a snack along with the movie and sodas, so we now bring a variety of sandwiches, chips and always a freshly baked cake and feed the 40 boys, four staff and our volunteers who prepare and serve the "menu of the evening."  Three of our church members, Ann Boring. Doris Hovis, and Tay Sullivan, are always there to help.  The boys are very fond of these three ladies.

When the boys reach a point in their program they, if on the good behavior list, are allowed to go on "off campus" trips.  One staff member for every five boys is required for trips to the THUNDER indoor football games, the CUBS baseball games at Jackie Robinson Stadium, the SPEEDWAY for car races and other events that offer B.N.W. free tickets.  Prior to each event, the B.N.W. prepares them a "dinner of their choice" at COMMUNITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH.  We now have our boys attend our church service on Sunday morning.  Many of these boys have never been inside a church and in the last three years two have been baptized.  They have lunch after church and then go to a private room at the OYSTER PUB for games of pool.

As a volunteer with our Stewart-Marchman Program, I have been enriched with knowing that our group will make a change in our boys lives -  not all, however; but if only one life is changed, we have done our job.
FOR FURTHER INFO I CAN BE AVAILABLE 24/7 ON 295-3214.  Thank you!  Frank Heckman
